-ურად (In a ... Way)

In a ... Way

Level 5Sounds Like urad

-ურად turns a word into an adverb that says in what way someone acts: მეგობრულად (in a friendly way).

How It Works

At Level 3 you met -ური and -ული, which make describing words from nouns: ბავშვი (child) gives ბავშვური (childish). At Level 2 you met -ად, which makes adverbs. Put them together and you get an adverb of manner: ბავშვურად (bavshvurad, childishly).

NounDescribing wordHow someone acts
ბავშვი (child)ბავშვურიბავშვურად (childishly)
ძმა (brother)ძმურიძმურად (like a brother)
ადამიანი (person)ადამიანურიადამიანურად (decently, humanely)
მეგობარი (friend)მეგობრულიმეგობრულად (in a friendly way)

The ending follows the rule of -ური/-ული: when the stem has a რ, it becomes -ულად (მეგობრულად). ქართულად (in Georgian) is built the same way, from ქართული.

Many of these adverbs compare a way of acting to a kind of person: ძმურად means as a brother would. Like other adverbs, it usually stands before the verb: ბავშვურად ნუ იქცევი (don't act like a child).

Examples (4)

  1. ის ყოველთვის მეგობრულად გვესალმება.

He always greets us in a friendly way.

მეგობარი has a რ, so the adverb ends in -ულად.

  2. ბავშვურად ნუ იქცევი!

    Don't act like a child!

    ბავშვურად is ბავშვური with -ად.

  3. ძმურად გეტყვი: ნუ წახვალ.

I'm telling you as a brother: don't go.

ძმურად means the way a brother would.

  4. ეს საკითხი ადამიანურად უნდა გადავწყვიტოთ.

We should settle this matter decently.

    ადამიანურად comes from ადამიანი (person).

Common Mistakes

  • Keeping -ურად when the stem has a რ.

    ის ყოველთვის მეგობრურად გვესალმება.
    ის ყოველთვის მეგობრულად გვესალმება.

მეგობარი has a რ, so the ending is -ულად, as in მეგობრული.
