თუმცა
Although and However
თუმცა means although or however and adds a contrast.
How It Works
| Where | Example |
|---|---|
| between two parts | ძვირია, თუმცა (tumtsa) ღირს. (It's expensive, but it's worth it.) |
| at the start | თუმცა ცივა, მზე ანათებს. (Although it's cold, the sun is shining.) |
| a new sentence | ფილმი გრძელი იყო. თუმცა, საინტერესო იყო. (The film was long. It was interesting, though.) |
მაგრამ and თუმცა are often both correct: ძვირია, მაგრამ ღირს. მაგრამ is the plain but. თუმცა sounds a little softer and is common in writing.
მაინც (still, anyway) often comes with თუმცა to stress the surprise: ავად იყო, თუმცა მაინც მოვიდა (she was sick, but she came anyway).
