ერთი მხრივ ..., მეორე მხრივ
On One Hand, On the Other
ერთი მხრივ ..., მეორე მხრივ ... weighs two sides of a question: on the one hand ..., on the other hand ...
How It Works
მხრივ (mkhriv) means from a side, in respect of. The pair ერთი მხრივ (on the one hand) and მეორე მხრივ (on the other hand) lays out two sides of a question:
ერთი მხრივ, თბილისში ცხოვრება მომწონს, მეორე მხრივ, სოფელი მენატრება. (On the one hand I like living in Tbilisi; on the other, I miss the village.)
Each half is a full clause. You can join them with მაგრამ (but), which then comes before მეორე მხრივ: ერთი მხრივ, ეს სამსახური საინტერესოა, მაგრამ, მეორე მხრივ, ხელფასი დაბალია.
In writing, put a comma after each phrase. In quick speech the pauses are shorter, as in ერთი მხრივ ძვირია, მეორე მხრივ ძალიან კარგია.
მხრივ also works without the pair: ამ მხრივ (in this respect), ყველა მხრივ (in every respect).
