თორემ
Or Else
თორემ means or else: it says what will happen if you don't.
How It Works
| Advice | თორემ (torem) ... |
|---|---|
| ადრე დაიძინე, | თორემ ხვალ დაიღლები. (Go to bed early, or you'll be tired tomorrow.) |
| ქუდი დაიხურე, | თორემ შეგცივდება. (Put on a hat, or you'll get cold.) |
A comma always comes before თორემ.
The first part can also be a don't with ნუ: ნუ ხმაურობ, თორემ ბავშვი გაიღვიძებს (don't make noise, or the baby will wake up).
English uses or for both meanings, but Georgian has two words. ან offers a choice: ჩაი ან ყავა (tea or coffee). თორემ warns about what happens otherwise.
The second part often uses the future, because it talks about what could happen next.
