ვიწყებ + Verbal Noun

Begin Doing

Level 3Sounds Like vitsʼqʼeb

Start and finish take a verbal noun: ქართულის სწავლა დავიწყე (I started learning Georgian).

How It Works

Start is ვიწყებ (vits'q'eb) and finish is ვამთავრებ (vamtavreb). After them, the action is a verbal noun, not another verb:

StartFinish
Presentვიწყებვამთავრებ
Futureდავიწყებდავამთავრებ
Pastდავიწყედავამთავრე

The verbal noun is the object, so it follows the object rules. In the present and future it takes -ს: ორშაბათს მუშაობას ვიწყებ (I start working on Monday). In the past it is in the nominative: ქართულის სწავლა დავიწყე (I started learning Georgian).

The verbal noun's own object goes in front in the genitive: წიგნის კითხვა (reading the book).

In the past, the he-form of start ends in -ო: ბავშვმა ტირილი დაიწყო (the child started crying).
