The Present Subjunctive

Level 4

The present subjunctive adds -დე- to the present: ვაკეთებდე, აკეთებდეს. It is used for wishes and imagined situations.

How It Works

Personვაკეთებ (I do)ვიცი (I know)მაქვს (I have)
Iვაკეთებდევიცოდემქონდეს
youაკეთებდეიცოდეგქონდეს
he, sheაკეთებდესიცოდესჰქონდეს
weვაკეთებდეთვიცოდეთგვქონდეს
you allაკეთებდეთიცოდეთგქონდეთ
theyაკეთებდნენიცოდნენჰქონდეთ

It looks like the imperfect with an -ე ending: ვაკეთებდი (I was doing) becomes ვაკეთებდე.

You will use it in these places:

  • wishes with ნეტავ: ნეტავ ცოტა მეტი დრო მქონდეს! (if only I had a bit more time!);
  • imagined if-clauses with რომ, the next entry: ქართული რომ ვიცოდე (if I knew Georgian);
  • after უნდა and მინდა, რომ with verbs that have no optative: ეს წესი უნდა იცოდე (you should know this rule).

To be has no subjunctive. It uses the optative იყოს instead.

Examples (5)

    If only I had a bit more time!

    A wish with ნეტავ.

    You should know this rule.

    ვიცი has no optative, so უნდა takes იცოდე.

    I want you to know this.

    After მინდა, რომ.

    He talks as if he knew everything.

    An imagined situation.

    A teacher has to have patience.

    მაქვს becomes ჰქონდეს for he or she.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the plain present after უნდა.

    After უნდა, ვიცი takes its -დე- form.
