-დ- (Was Doing, Used To)

Was Doing and Used to

Level 4Sounds Like (-d-)

Add -დ- and past endings to the present to say was doing or used to do.

How It Works

PersonPresentImperfect
Iვაკეთებვაკეთებდი (vak'etebdi)
youაკეთებაკეთებდი
he, sheაკეთებსაკეთებდა
weვაკეთებთვაკეთებდით
you allაკეთებთაკეთებდით
theyაკეთებენაკეთებდნენ

The present ending -ს drops: აკეთებს, აკეთებდა. Many verbs follow this pattern: ვსვამ, ვსვამდი; ვთამაშობ, ვთამაშობდი.

Verbs of going and many becoming verbs add -ოდ- instead: მიდის, მიდიოდა (was going). A verb of going keeps the preverb of its present, as მი- in მიდიოდა.

It has two jobs. It sets the scene: ქუჩაში ბავშვები თამაშობდნენ (children were playing in the street). It also tells habits, often with ხოლმე: ზაფხულში ზღვაზე დავდიოდით (in summer we used to go to the seaside).

You know this shape already from ვიცოდი, მინდოდა and მქონდა.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the ergative with the imperfect.

    ნინომ წიგნს კითხულობდა.
    ნინო წიგნს კითხულობდა.

The imperfect is in the present group, so the subject is in the nominative.

  • Adding a preverb when you mean was writing.

    ნინო წერილს დაწერდა.
    ნინო წერილს წერდა.

With და-, დაწერდა is the conditional, would write. The imperfect is built on the present წერს, which has no preverb.
