The Future Subjunctive
The future subjunctive is the future with -დე- endings (გავაკეთებდე, მოვიდოდე); it is a literary and formal form for something unlikely that might happen later.
How It Works
You know the present subjunctive from Level 4: ვწერდე, წვიმდეს. The future subjunctive gives the future the same -დე endings:
| Future | Conditional | Future subjunctive |
|---|---|---|
| დავწერ | დავწერდი | დავწერდე |
| გავაკეთებ | გავაკეთებდი | გავაკეთებდე |
| მოვალ | მოვიდოდი | მოვიდოდე |
It looks like the conditional with a different ending: -დი becomes -დე, and for he or she -და becomes -დეს (დაწერდა, დაწერდეს).
The form is rare today. It describes an unlikely event in the future, usually in a clause that depends on another one. You will meet it in literature and in formal or legal texts: თუ ვინმე მოვიდოდეს, დამიძახეთ (should anyone come, call me).
In everyday speech, a plain future after თუ does this job: თუ ვინმე მოვა, დამიძახეთ (if anyone comes, call me). Learn to recognize the future subjunctive, and use the simpler forms when you write.
