Subjunctive

If I Had

Level 4Sounds Like rom

An imagined if uses რომ with the present subjunctive, and the result is in the conditional.

How It Works

Imagined if: რომ + subjunctiveResult: conditional

Compare a real if with თუ: თუ ფული მექნება, ვიყიდი (if I have money, I'll buy it). That might happen. ფული რომ მქონდეს, ვიყიდდი (if I had money, I would buy it) says it is not so now.

რომ usually stands after the first word or phrase of the if-clause: ფული რომ მქონდეს.

To be has no -დე- form, so it uses the optative: ამინდი რომ კარგი იყოს (if the weather were good).

For an imagined past (if I had known), Georgian uses another form, the pluperfect, which comes at Level 6.

Examples (4)

If I had money, I would travel a lot.

მქონდეს is the subjunctive of მაქვს.

If I knew Georgian, I would read this book.

The result is in the conditional.

If I were you, I would take this job.

To be uses the optative

If the weather were nice, we would go to the sea.

იყოს: the optative of to be.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the present for an imagined if.

An imagined if needs the subjunctive.
