Between and Among

Put შორის after a dative to say between or among.

How It Works

Genitive + wordDative + შორის
ფილმის შესახებ (about the film)ორ ფილმს შორის (between two films)
ხის გამო (because of the tree)ხეებს შორის (shoris) (among the trees)

That makes შორის easy to get wrong: შესახებ, გამო and გარდა take the genitive, but შორის takes the dative.

A number before the noun loses its -ი, as it always does in the dative: ორ სახლს შორის.

When two names are joined with და, the first one often takes a longer dative ending, -სა: თბილისსა და ბათუმს შორის (between Tbilisi and Batumi). You will learn these longer endings at Level 6.

ჩვენ შორის also means between you and me, for a secret.

    The bank is between two cafés.

    Dative: ორ კაფეს.

  2. ეს ჩვენ შორის საიდუმლოა.

    This is a secret between us.

    Pronouns keep their form: ჩვენ შორის.

  3. სტუდენტებს შორის ბევრი უცხოელი არის.

    There are many foreigners among the students.

    For a group: among.

  4. მეგობრებს შორის ყველაზე მხიარული ლუკაა.

    Among his friends, Luka is the most cheerful.

    Among a group of friends.

  5. ხეებს შორის პატარა სახლი დავინახეთ.

    We saw a little house among the trees.

    The plural in the dative: ხეებს.

  • Using the genitive with შორის.

    ბანკი ორი სახლის შორის არის.
    ბანკი ორ სახლს შორის არის.

    შორის takes the dative, not the genitive.
