ქვეშ/უკან/გვერდით

Under, Behind and Next to

Level 2Sounds Like kvesh/ukʼan/gverdit

Put a noun in the genitive -ის, then add ქვეშ (under), უკან (behind) or გვერდით (next to).

How It Works

These three words tell you where something is. Like გარეშე and წინ, each one comes after a noun in the genitive -ის.

WordMeaningExample
ქვეშ (kvesh)underმაგიდის ქვეშ (under the table)
უკან (uk'an)behindსახლის უკან (behind the house)
გვერდით (gverdit)next toბანკის გვერდით (next to the bank)

The order is the opposite of English. English says under the table, but Georgian says table-of under: მაგიდის ქვეშ.

With people, use the short pronouns: ჩემ გვერდით (next to me), შენ უკან (behind you).

These words often go with verbs of position, such as ზის (sits), დგას (stands) and წევს (lies): ძაღლი ხის ქვეშ წევს (the dog is lying under the tree).

Common Mistakes

  • Putting the word before the noun, as in English.

    კატა მაგიდის ქვეშ არის.

The noun comes first, then ქვეშ.
