შეიძლება + Optative
It Might Happen
შეიძლება with the optative says that something might happen, or asks whether you may do it.
How It Works
You met შეიძლება (sheidzleba) at Level 2 as may I. With the optative, a full verb with its own person ending follows it.
| Meaning | Example |
|---|---|
| It might happen | შეიძლება იწვიმოს. (It might rain.) |
| Permission | შეიძლება შემოვიდე? (May I come in?) |
| It might not happen | შეიძლება ლუკა არ მოვიდეს. (Luka might not come.) |
| It is not allowed | აქ მოწევა არ შეიძლება. (Smoking isn't allowed here.) |
Watch where არ goes. Before the optative, it says the thing might not happen: შეიძლება არ მოვიდეს (he might not come). Before შეიძლება, it says something is not allowed.
შეიძლება stays the same for every person. Only the optative after it changes: შეიძლება დავაგვიანო (I might be late), შეიძლება დააგვიანოს (he might be late).
