Old Plural -ნი/-თა

The Old Plural

Level 6Sounds Like ni/-ta

An older plural with -ნი and -თა lives on in names, titles and formal writing: ბავშვთა უფლებები (children's rights).

How It Works

Before the -ებ- plural took over, Georgian had another plural. It survives in fixed phrases, names and formal style.

CaseOld pluralEveryday plural
nominativeქართველნიქართველები
vocativeმეგობარნომეგობრებო
ergative, dative, genitiveქართველთაქართველებმა, ქართველებს, ქართველების

The endings go straight on the stem, so -თა and -ებ- never appear together: ბავშვთა, never ბავშვებთა. A stem may keep a vowel it loses in the everyday plural: მეგობარნო, but მეგობრებო.

You will meet the old plural most as a genitive in names: ბავშვთა დაცვის საერთაშორისო დღე (International Children's Day), ქალთა საერთაშორისო დღე (International Women's Day), მწერალთა კავშირი (the Writers' Union). Speeches use it to call a crowd: ძვირფასო მეგობარნო (dear friends).

Dictionaries mark these forms as old. In your own writing, use -ებ-, and keep the old plural for set names and solemn style.
