News Passives
News reports describe events with one-word passives in the past: შეხვედრა გაიმართა (a meeting was held), გამოფენა გაიხსნა (an exhibition opened).
How It Works
News stories usually report what happened, not who made it happen. For that, they use past passives:
| Verb | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| გაიმართა | was held | კონფერენცია გაიმართა. |
| გაიხსნა | opened | მუზეუმი გაიხსნა. |
| დასრულდა | ended | ფესტივალი დასრულდა. |
| დაიწყო | began | რთველი დაიწყო. |
| გამოქვეყნდა | was published | პროგრამა გამოქვეყნდა. |
| დაიკეტა | was closed | გზა დაიკეტა. |
These are becoming verbs, so the subject is nominative in every tense: კონფერენცია გაიმართა, with no -მა.
Many pair with a doing verb: მართავს (holds, runs) gives გაიმართება (will be held), and ხსნის (opens) gives გაიხსნება (will open). The future works the same way: შეხვედრა ხვალ გაიმართება (the meeting will be held tomorrow).
When the doer matters, the report adds it with -ის მიერ (Level 5). The heavier official passive, მიღებულ იქნა, is the next step up in formality.
