ხოლო
Whereas
ხოლო is a formal whereas or while, for setting two facts side by side.
How It Works
ხოლო (kholo) sets two facts side by side, often in contrast. It belongs to careful writing, news, reports and instructions.
ნინო ექიმია, ხოლო გიორგი მასწავლებელი. (Nino is a doctor, whereas Giorgi is a teacher.)
ხოლო stands first in the second clause, after a comma. When both halves would repeat the same verb, the second half often drops it, as in the example above.
| Style | Example |
|---|---|
| formal | ზაფხულში აქ ცხელა, ხოლო ზამთარში ძალიან ცივა. |
| everyday | ზაფხულში აქ ცხელა, ზამთარში კი ძალიან ცივა. |
In the everyday version, კი (Level 3) comes after the first word or phrase of the second half.
ხოლო is also common in instructions, to give the next step: ჯერ ფორმა შეავსეთ, ხოლო შემდეგ საბუთები ატვირთეთ (first fill in the form, then upload the documents).
მაგრამ (but) is stronger: it says the second fact goes against the first.
