After a genitive, თანახმად means in line with or under, for laws, rules and agreements.
How It Works
თანახმად (tanakhmad) follows a genitive and says what rule or text something follows:
- კანონის თანახმად (under the law)
- ხელშეკრულების თანახმად (under the contract)
- წესების თანახმად (under the rules)
- ექიმის რჩევის თანახმად (on the doctor's advice)
It is a formal word, common in contracts, notices, official letters and news. The phrase usually opens the sentence, followed by a comma.
-ის მიხედვით (Level 4) is the broader, everyday according to, and it also works for opinions and sources: ამინდის პროგნოზის მიხედვით (according to the weather forecast). Use თანახმად when a rule, an agreement or a piece of advice stands behind the action.
The same root gives the everyday word თანახმა (agreeing): თანახმა ვარ (I agree).
