Ĉi: Near the Speaker

Level 4

A ti- word alone points away from the speaker, and ĉi brings it close.

How It Works

Far from meNear me
tie (there)ĉi tie or tie ĉi (here)
tiu domo (that house)ĉi tiu domo or tiu ĉi domo (this house)
tio (that)tio ĉi or ĉi tio (this)

Ĉi is written as a separate word: ĉi tiu, tie ĉi. When ĉi becomes the front part of one new adverb or adjective, such as ĉi-foje (this time) or ĉi-nokte (tonight), it has a hyphen.

Often ĉi points to something you just mentioned: De kie vi tion ĉi scias? means "How do you know what I just said?". If you compare two things, tiu ĉi is the one named last and plain tiu is the one named earlier.

With time, say nun (now), because ĉi tiam is hardly used.

Examples (5)

  1. Ĉi tie ni parolas nur Esperanton.

    Here we speak only Esperanto.

Ĉi tie means the place where the speakers are.

  2. Mi ŝatas ĉi tiun libron, sed Ana ŝatas tiun.

I like this book, but Ana likes that one.

Ĉi tiun points at the book near me, and plain tiun points at the one farther away.

  3. Tiu ĉi kongreso estas la unua por mi.

This congress is the first for me.

Tiu ĉi means the congress we are at now; ĉi may stand after tiu.

  4. Kio estas tio ĉi?

    What is this?

Tio ĉi points at something close, such as an object in your hand.

  5. Ĉi-foje ni venkos!

    This time we will win!

Ĉi-foje is a set compound with a hyphen.

Common Mistakes

  • Joining ĉi to the next word with a hyphen.

    Mi ŝatas ĉi-tiun libron.
    Mi ŝatas ĉi tiun libron.

Ĉi is a separate word in ĉi tiu, tiu ĉi, ĉi tie and tio ĉi. Only a new word built with ĉi, such as ĉi-foje, uses a hyphen.
