po

Po: Each

Level 4

Po comes before the number or amount that each one gets.

How It Works

ExampleMeaning
Ĉiu gasto trinkis po glaso da vino. Each guest drank a glass of wine.
Ni sidos po ses personoj en unu vico.We will sit six people to a row.
La pomoj kostas po 2 eŭrojn por kilogramo. The apples cost 2 euros for each kilogram.

The total is the portion times the number of people or things. If each of four guests drinks po glaso, four glasses are drunk.

Traditionally the word after po has no -n: po tri pomoj. Many writers treat po like a number word and add -n when the phrase is an object: po tri pomojn. Both are correct.

For a price, the sum is what repeats. Put po before the sum and name the unit after por. The price keeps its -n, because a price is a measure.
