ne nur … sed ankaŭ / ĉu … ĉu
Not Only ... but Also
Ne nur names the first thing, sed ankaŭ adds the second; ĉu ... ĉu names two cases that give the same result.
How It Works
| Pattern | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| ne nur ... sed ankaŭ | Ne nur Ana, sed ankaŭ Kenji venis. | Not only Ana but also Kenji came. |
| ne nur ... sed ankaŭ | Hiro ne nur parolas Esperanton, sed ankaŭ skribas ĝin bone. | Hiro not only speaks Esperanto but also writes it well. |
| ĉu ... ĉu | Ĉu pluvos, ĉu ne, ni iros. | Whether it rains or not, we will go. |
In ne nur ... sed ankaŭ, sed links the contrast and ankaŭ adds the new thing. The two things have the same job in the sentence.
In ĉu ... ĉu, the first ĉu does not ask a question. The pair shows that the choice is open: Ĉu en Brazilo, ĉu en Japanio, la esperantistoj estas afablaj.
A question with two choices, such as "Is he coming or not?", uses ĉu ... aŭ and not ĉu ... ĉu: Ĉu li venos aŭ ne?
