Questions Inside Sentences
The question word stays, the order stays, and a comma comes before it.
How It Works
| Direct question | Inside a sentence |
|---|---|
| Ĉu li venos? | Mi ne scias, ĉu li venos. |
| Kie ŝi loĝas? | Diru al mi, kie ŝi loĝas. |
| Kiom kostas la bileto? | Ni ne scias, kiom kostas la bileto. |
For a yes-or-no question, use ĉu where English uses "whether" or "if". Do not use se, which starts a condition. For two choices, write ĉu li venos aŭ ne.
The tense is the tense of the original question. If Ewa asked Ĉu vi iros kun mi? (will you go with me?), the report keeps iros: Ewa demandis, ĉu mi iros kun ŝi. Only the persons change.
These clauses usually follow verbs such as scii (know), demandi (ask), diri (say) and pripensi (think over).
Examples (5)
- Mi ne scias, ĉu Hiro venos al la kongreso.
I do not know whether Hiro will come to the congress.
Ĉu means whether and starts the question inside the sentence.
- Diru al mi, kie la akceptejo estas.
Tell me where the reception desk is.
Kie stays as the question word; there is no ke.
- Ana demandis, kiom kostas la bileto.
Ana asked how much the ticket costs.
The tense stays kostas, as in the original question.
- Ni ne komprenas, kial la trajno ne ekiras.
We do not understand why the train does not leave.
Kial starts the question and names what we do not understand.
- Ewa demandis, ĉu mi iros kun ŝi al la parko.
Ewa asked whether I would go with her to the park.
The original question was Ĉu vi iros kun mi?, so iros stays in the future.
Common Mistakes
Using se for "whether".
Mi ne scias, se li venos.Mi ne scias, ĉu li venos.Se starts a condition. A question inside a sentence starts with ĉu.
Putting ke before a question word.
Mi ne scias, ke kie li loĝas.Mi ne scias, kie li loĝas.The question word already starts the clause, so ke is not added.
