ankaŭ
Also
Put ankaŭ in front of the word it adds.
How It Works
| Sentence | What ankaŭ adds |
|---|---|
| Ankaŭ Ana lernas Esperanton. | Ana: she learns it too, like others. |
| Ana ankaŭ lernas Esperanton. | Usually the action: she learns it, besides doing other things. |
| Ana lernas ankaŭ Esperanton. | Esperanto: she learns it besides another language. |
Ankaŭ tells the listener that something is not alone. It points at the word right after it, and in speech people lean on that word.
Ankaŭ can also follow the word it adds, as Zamenhof often wrote: Ili ankaŭ estas en la ĝardeno (they too are in the garden). That is why Ana ankaŭ lernas can also mean that Ana, like others, learns it. To be clear, put ankaŭ first.
Ankaŭ can stand before a whole phrase too: Mi parolas ankaŭ kun Kofi adds a person to talk with.
Do not mix up ankaŭ with ankoraŭ, which means still or yet.
