aŭ … aŭ / nek … nek / kaj … kaj

Either ... or, Neither ... nor, Both ... and

Level 4

The first word comes before the first choice, and the second word before the second.

How It Works

PairExampleMeaning
aŭ ... aŭHiro trinkas aŭ teon aŭ kafon.Hiro drinks either tea or coffee, not both.
nek ... nekEwa havas nek aŭton nek biciklon.Ewa has neither a car nor a bike.
kaj ... kajKaj Ewa kaj Wei parolas Esperanton kun mi.Both Ewa and Wei speak Esperanto with me.

The first word of the pair stands before the first choice, and the second stands before the second choice. In speech you stress both words.

The plain words aŭ, kaj and nek stand once, between the two items. The paired forms are stronger: aŭ ... aŭ means that one of the two must be true and no third choice exists.

The pair nek ... nek already means "and not ... and not", so no extra ne is added. And nek cannot mean "and also without": say sen halto kaj sen ripozo.

Examples (5)

  1. Hiro trinkas aŭ teon aŭ kafon.

Hiro drinks either tea or coffee.

Hiro drinks one of the two.

  2. Aŭ ni ekiras nun, aŭ ni malfruos.

Either we set out now, or we will be late.

Aŭ ... aŭ can link two whole clauses.

  3. Nek Ana nek Kenji scias la respondon.

Neither Ana nor Kenji knows the answer.

Nek ... nek already means not, so no extra ne is added.

  4. Ewa havas nek aŭton nek biciklon.

Ewa has neither a car nor a bike.

Aŭton and biciklon both keep -n as objects.

  5. Kaj Ewa kaj Wei parolas Esperanton kun mi.

Both Ewa and Wei speak Esperanto with me.

Kaj ... kaj stresses that both are true.

Common Mistakes

  • Using aŭ ... aŭ for "both".

Aŭ Ana aŭ Kenji venis al la kunveno.
Kaj Ana kaj Kenji venis al la kunveno.

Aŭ ... aŭ means one of the two, so the first sentence says that only one came. For both, use kaj ... kaj.

  • Using nek for "and also without".

Ni laboris sen halto nek ripozo.
Ni laboris sen halto kaj sen ripozo.

Nek means and also not. It cannot stand for "and also without".
