aŭ
Or
Aŭ links choices, and each choice has the ending it would have alone.
How It Works
| Sentence | The choices |
|---|---|
| Ĉu vi volas kafon aŭ teon? | two objects, both with -n |
| Mi venos hodiaŭ aŭ morgaŭ. | two time words |
| La akvo estas varma aŭ malvarma. | two describing words |
Aŭ works like kaj, but it shows a choice. Usually one choice is meant: Ĉu vi volas kafon aŭ teon? asks you to pick one.
The choices do the same job in the sentence, so they have the same endings. Two objects both take -n: kafon aŭ teon.
With more than two choices, put aŭ only before the last one and use commas between the others: per trajno, buso aŭ biciklo.
A ĉu question can offer a choice too: Ĉu vi venas hodiaŭ aŭ morgaŭ? asks which day.
Examples (5)

Do you want coffee or tea, Mei?

- Mi venos al la kongreso hodiaŭ aŭ morgaŭ.
I will come to the congress today or tomorrow.
Aŭ joins two time words.

Is the water warm or cold?
Aŭ joins two describing words after estas.
- Vi povas veni per trajno, buso aŭ biciklo.

Aŭ can join two subjects.
Common Mistakes
Leaving -n off the second choice.
Ĉu vi volas kafon aŭ teo?Ĉu vi volas kafon aŭ teon? Both drinks are objects of volas, so both need -n.
