ajn

Ajn: Any and Ever

Level 4

Ajn comes after the table word and says it does not matter which one.

How It Works

WithExampleMeaning
ki- wordkie ajn, kiam ajnwherever, whenever
i- wordiu ajn, io ajnanyone, anything
-n on the table wordiun ajn, kion ajnanyone, whatever (as an object)

A ki- word with ajn starts a clause that says "it does not matter": Kie ajn vi loĝas, vi trovos amikojn. An i- word with ajn can stand in any place of the sentence: Iu ajn povas lerni Esperanton.

The order is fixed: ajn comes after the table word, never before it. Adding ajn turns a question word into "no matter which": kiu (who) becomes kiu ajn (whoever).

Examples (5)

  1. Iu ajn povas lerni Esperanton.

    Anyone can learn Esperanto.

Iu ajn means any person at all.

  2. Vi povas veni kiam ajn.

You can come whenever you like.

Kiam ajn means at any time.

  3. Kie ajn vi loĝas, vi trovos samideanojn.

Wherever you live, you will find fellow Esperantists.

Kie ajn starts a clause that says the place does not matter.

  4. Kion ajn vi petos, Pavel provos helpi.

Whatever you ask for, Pavel will try to help.

Kion ajn takes -n because it is the object of petos.

  5. Mi helpos iun ajn, kiu havas demandon.

I will help anyone who has a question.

The -n is on iun, not on ajn.

Common Mistakes

  • Putting ajn before the table word.

Ajn kiam vi volas, vi povas veni.
Kiam ajn vi volas, vi povas veni.

Ajn always comes after the table word it goes with.

  • Putting the -n on the wrong word, or leaving it out.

    Mi helpos iu ajn.
    Mi helpos iun ajn.

Ajn has no ending. The table word before it takes -n when the sentence needs it.
