Adjectives and Their Prepositions

Level 4

The preposition and the adjective go together, and the phrase stands after the adjective.

How It Works

AdjectiveExampleMeaning
plena de (or je)La botelo estas plena de akvo. The bottle is full of water.
kontenta priNi estas kontentaj pri la rezulto. We are satisfied with the result.
preta porLa studentoj estas pretaj por la ekzameno. The students are ready for the exam.
certa priAna estas certa pri sia respondo.Ana is sure about her answer.
scivolema priHiro estas scivolema pri ĉio.Hiro is curious about everything.

The noun after the preposition has the plain form, with no -n: pretaj por la ekzameno. The adjective agrees with its noun: kontentaj, because ni is plural.

Do not use da after plena: da follows words for amounts, and plena tells a state. Write plena de akvo. An infinitive can follow some adjectives, with or without por: preta por fari, kapabla instrui.

Examples (5)

  1. La botelo estas plena de akvo.

The bottle is full of water.

Plena takes de (or je) before what fills it.

  2. Ni estas kontentaj pri la rezulto.

We are satisfied with the result.

Kontenta pri names what satisfies us; kontentaj agrees with ni.

  3. La studentoj estas pretaj por la ekzameno.

The students are ready for the exam.

Preta por names what we are ready for.

  4. Ana estas certa pri sia respondo.

Ana is sure about her answer.

Certa pri names the topic of the certainty; sia points back to Ana.

  5. Hiro estas scivolema pri ĉio.

    Hiro is curious about everything.

Scivolema pri names what Hiro wants to know.

Common Mistakes

  • Using da after plena.

La botelo estas plena da akvo.
La botelo estas plena de akvo.

Da joins an amount to a noun. Plena tells a state, so it takes de or je.

  • Using de after kontenta.

Ni estas kontentaj de la rezulto.
Ni estas kontentaj pri la rezulto.

Kontenta goes with pri (in older texts also with je), not with de.
