Pluperfect Subjunctive
The pluperfect subjunctive combines hagués-type forms with a participle.
How It Works
Use hagués, haguessis, hagués, haguéssim, haguéssiu or haguessin plus a participle for an event prior to a past or remote viewpoint. Regional standard haguera-type forms also exist; use one paradigm consistently.
A past evaluation can select it: em va sorprendre que haguessis marxat. In a counterfactual condition, si haguessis vingut places the unrealized condition in the past. Its usual consequence is hauries vist..., a conditional perfect.
Do not confuse the pluperfect indicative havia vingut with this form. Both place an event earlier, but the governing construction determines whether the earlier event is asserted or presented within a subjunctive frame.
