Pluperfect for earlier past
The pluperfect places a completed event before another past reference point.
How It Works
Ja havia marxat quan vas trucar says the leaving was already complete before the call. Form the tense with imperfect haver plus a participle: havia, havies, havia, havíem, havíeu, havien + participle.
The earlier event can be stated before or after the later event in the sentence; the tense marks its relationship to the past reference point. It does not simply mean a very remote past. Even two actions minutes apart can require this distinction.
Keep pronouns and negation before the finite auxiliary: no ho havíem preparat. Contrast havíem de preparar-ho, which expresses past obligation with de and an infinitive, not completed prior action. Common irregular participles keep the same lexical forms as in the present perfect: havia fet, havia vist, havia dit.
