Conditional as future in the past
The conditional can locate an event after a past reference point.
How It Works
Va dir que vindria means the coming lay in the future from the moment of speaking in the past. The conditional does not by itself tell us whether the person eventually came. It reports the earlier forward-looking perspective.
Compare diu que vindrà with va dir que vindria. If the reported situation remains current, tense choices can depend on the speaker's viewpoint, so not every past reporting verb requires automatic mechanical backshift. Person and time expressions must also match the report.
A sentence such as pensàvem que plouria places the expected rain after a past thought. This is different from a courteous voldria or a conditional consequence. The same tense can serve several functions; identify the timeline before translating it simply as English would.
