Definite direct-object clitics

Level 3

El, la, els and les replace definite direct objects and agree with them.

How It Works

A definite object is identified in context: compro el llibre becomes el compro. Use la for a feminine singular object, els for masculine plural and les for feminine plural. The pronoun follows the grammatical gender of the object, even when English calls it it.

To select a pronoun in a longer sentence, recover the exact definite object. Les entrades que he comprat becomes les he comprat, while el bitllet becomes l'he comprat. An adjective attached to the object does not determine a new pronoun on its own; the noun's gender and number remain decisive.

Do not use li simply because the object is human: la conec can refer to a woman as the direct object of conèixer. Li belongs to an indirect-object construction. For an indefinite quantity, en is often needed instead, and for an idea expressed by això or a clause, ho is the normal contrast.

The tickets? I bought them today.

  2. El director? El coneixem bé.

  3. La porta? La tancarem després.

The door? We will close it later.
