…သူ
The Person Who Does It
In everyday speech, V-တဲ့သူ says the same thing: ဝယ်တဲ့သူ (the person who buys).
How It Works
Put သူ after a verb or a short verb phrase, and you get a noun for the person who does it.
| Verb | With သူ | English |
|---|---|---|
| ဝယ် (buy) | ဝယ်သူ | buyer, customer |
| ရောင်း (sell) | ရောင်းသူ | seller |
| စာရေး (write) | စာရေးသူ | writer |
| နားထောင် (listen) | နားထောင်သူ | listener |
| သင်ယူ (learn) | သင်ယူသူ | learner |
Here သူ means "the one who" and covers men and women. Before a verb, သူ is the word for "he" or "she": သူ ဝယ်တယ် (he buys).
These nouns sound a little formal. You see them on signs, in shops, in books and on the radio. In everyday talk, V-တဲ့သူ says the same thing: ဝယ်တဲ့သူ (the person who buys).
For more than one person, add တွေ in speech and များ in writing: နားထောင်သူတွေ, နားထောင်သူများ.
Some of these are the usual words for a role: ဝယ်သူ is what a shop calls its customers.
