ကိုယ်တိုင် goes after a person to stress who did it: ကျွန်မကိုယ်တိုင် ချုပ်ထားတာပါ။ (I made it myself.)

How It Works

Both words start with ကိုယ် (self). They answer two different questions.

Put a pronoun or name in front to say who. Before ဘာသာ, pronouns take the creaky tone: ကျွန်တော့်ဘာသာ, သူ့ဘာသာ. ကျွန်မ stays the same: ကျွန်မဘာသာ.

Before ကိုယ်တိုင်, the pronoun stays plain: ကျွန်တော်ကိုယ်တိုင်, သူကိုယ်တိုင်.

A pronoun said twice around ဘာသာ means "on his own" or "on her own": သူ့ဘာသာသူ နေပါစေ (Leave him alone).

တစ်ယောက်တည်း means "alone", with no one else there.

ကိုယ်တိုင် often shows care or proof: ကျွန်မကိုယ်တိုင် တွေ့ခဲ့တယ် (I saw it myself). ကိုယ့်ဘာသာ shows that no one helped: ကလေးက သူ့ဘာသာ ဖိနပ်စီးတတ်ပြီ (The little girl can put on her shoes by herself now).

ကိုယ့်ဘာသာ is common when you turn down help: ရပါတယ်၊ ကိုယ့်ဘာသာ လုပ်မယ် (It's fine, I'll do it myself).

Examples (5)

  1. ကိုယ့်ဘာသာ ချက်စားတယ်။

    I cook for myself.

    ကိုယ့်ဘာသာ means nobody helps.

  2. ဒါ ကျွန်မကိုယ်တိုင် ချုပ်ထားတဲ့ အင်္ကျီပါ။

    This is a blouse I made myself.

    A woman speaks. ကိုယ်တိုင် stresses that she made it.

  3. ကလေးက သူ့ဘာသာ ဖိနပ်စီးတတ်ပြီ။

    The little girl can put on her shoes by herself now.

    သူ့ဘာသာ means "on her own".

  4. ကျွန်တော်ကိုယ်တိုင် မန်နေဂျာနဲ့ သွားပြောမယ်။

    I'll go and talk to the manager myself.

    A man speaks. ကျွန်တော်ကိုယ်တိုင် means "I myself, in person".

  5. သူ့ဘာသာသူ နေပါစေ။

    Leave him alone.

    သူ့ဘာသာသူ means "on his own".

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving out the creaky tone before ဘာသာ.

    ကျွန်တော်ဘာသာ လုပ်မယ်။
    ကျွန်တော့်ဘာသာ လုပ်မယ်။

    A man speaks. Before ဘာသာ, ကျွန်တော် becomes ကျွန်တော့်.
