မ…နိုင်ဘူး
Cannot
Add ပါ to turn someone down politely: မလာနိုင်ပါဘူး။ (I'm afraid I can't come.)
How It Works
Burmese has three ways to say "can't", and each has its own reason behind it.
| Pattern | Reason | Example |
|---|---|---|
| မ…နိုင်ဘူး | not able this time | ဒီနေ့ မလာနိုင်ဘူး။ |
| မ…တတ်ဘူး | never learned how | ရေမကူးတတ်ဘူး။ |
| မ…ရဘူး | not allowed | ဒီမှာ မထိုင်ရဘူး။ |
Use မ…နိုင်ဘူး to turn down a plan, to say a task is too much, or to say you are busy: ဒီလောက် မစားနိုင်ဘူး (I can't eat this much).
A polite refusal often starts with an apology: တောင်းပန်ပါတယ်၊ မလာနိုင်ပါဘူး။ (Sorry, I can't come.)
You can also give the reason first: ဒီနေ့ အလုပ်များလို့ မလာနိုင်ဘူး (I'm busy with work today, so I can't come).
Like other negatives, မ goes right before the main verb and ဘူး comes at the end. With a two-part verb such as ကူညီ (help), မ goes before the whole verb: မကူညီနိုင်ဘူး.

How It Connects
Learn This First
Cannot is the negative of နိုင်, so နိုင် and the negative wrap come first.
