Each

Level 3

With people, စီ also means "in groups of": နှစ်ယောက်စီ တွဲပြီး ထိုင်ပါ။ (Sit in pairs.)

How It Works

စီ shares things out evenly. The number before it says how many each person gets.

FormEnglish
တစ်ခုစီone each
နှစ်ခုစီtwo each
တစ်ခွက်စီa cup each
နှစ်ယောက်စီin pairs

The classifier must match the thing: ခု for most things, ခွက် for cups, ယောက် for people.

ချင်းစီ means "one at a time, separately": တစ်ယောက်ချင်းစီကို မေးမယ် (I'll ask everyone one at a time).

For "every" with a noun, use

The person who gets a share takes ကို: တစ်ယောက်ကို (to each person). Money works the same way: တစ်ယောက်ကို ငါးထောင်စီ ပေးရမယ် (Each person has to pay 5,000 kyat). A teacher hands out books this way: တစ်ယောက်ကို စာအုပ်တစ်အုပ်စီ (one book for each person). Books take အုပ်.

Ask how many each person gets with ဘယ်နှ… (How many does each person get?).

Common Mistakes

  • Leaving out the classifier.

စီ comes after the classifier, here ခု.
