следва да + Verb
Formal Obligation with Следва Да
Следва да + verb means should, is to or must in formal writing: Документите следва да бъдат подадени до петък. (The documents are to be submitted by Friday.)
How It Works
1. Form. Следва does not change for person or number. The verb after да agrees with the subject:
- Кандидатите следва да представят диплома. (Applicants should submit a diploma.)
- Вие следва да се явите лично. (You are to appear in person.)
2. Impersonal and passive use. Official texts often use следва да се or the passive with бъда:
- Следва да се отбележи, че данните са непълни. (It should be noted that the data are incomplete.)
- Сметката следва да бъде платена в срок. (The bill is to be paid on time.)
3. Negative, past and softened forms. Не следва да means should not. Следваше да refers to a past duty, often one that was not met: Това следваше да се направи по-рано. (This should have been done earlier.) Би следвало да is softer, like ought to: Би следвало да се извините. (See условно наклонение.)
4. Other meanings of следва. Without да, следва means follows: Следва продължение. (To be continued.) От това следва, че... (It follows from this that...) Only следва да + verb expresses obligation.
