The Verb Бъда

The verb съм (to be) has a second form, бъда. Use it after да and in commands: Искам да бъда лекар (I want to be a doctor), Бъди внимателен! (Be careful!).

How It Works

1. The forms. Бъда conjugates like чета:

  • (аз) бъда, (ти) бъдеш, (той/тя/то) бъде
  • (ние) бъдем, (вие) бъдете, (те) бъдат

The imperative is бъди (to one person) and бъдете (to several people, or politely).

2. Where бъда is used.

  • After да: Искам да бъда лекар. (I want to be a doctor.) Трябва да бъдеш търпелив. (You have to be patient.) See искам да and трябва да.
  • In commands: only бъда has imperative forms: Бъди спокоен! (Stay calm!) Бъдете добри! (Be good!) Negative commands work too: Не бъди глупав! (Don't be silly!)
  • In the future: Утре ще бъда в офиса. (Tomorrow I will be at the office.) The form ще съм is also correct; see the future of съм.
  • In clauses about the future after ако, когато or нека: Когато бъдеш готов, кажи ми. (When you are ready, tell me.) Нека бъде така! (Let it be so!)
  • In the passive with бъда in formal style: Писмото ще бъде изпратено утре. (The letter will be sent tomorrow.) See the passive with бъда.

3. Where бъда is NOT used. For the plain present, always use съм, си, е, сме, сте, са: Аз съм учител (I am a teacher), never *Аз бъда учител.

4. Да съм or да бъда? After да you will also hear да съм: Искам да съм с теб. (I want to be with you.) Both are correct. Да бъда is a little more careful and is the usual choice in writing.

Tip: the verb after да must match its own subject: Искам да бъда (I want to be), Искам да бъдеш (I want you to be).

    After да, бъда replaces съм.

  2. Трябва да бъдеш търпелив.

    You have to be patient.

    Бъдеш is second person singular, matching ти.

  3. Бъди внимателен на пътя!

    Be careful on the road!

    Бъди is the imperative for one person.

  4. Бъдете спокойни, всичко ще бъде наред.

    Stay calm, everything will be fine.

    Бъдете addresses several people; ще бъде is the future.

  5. Утре ще бъда в офиса цял ден.

    Tomorrow I will be at the office all day.

  6. Не искам да бъда сам.

    I don't want to be alone.

Common Mistakes

  • Using бъда for the plain present.

    Аз бъда учител.
    Аз съм учител.

    Бъда never replaces съм in the ordinary present. Use it after да, ще or нека, in commands, and in clauses about the future such as ако бъда (if I am).

  • Leaving бъда in the third person after да when you mean yourself.

    Искам да бъде лекар.
    Искам да бъда лекар.

    With the intended meaning "I want to be a doctor", the verb after да must be first person: бъда. Искам да бъде лекар means "I want him or her to be a doctor".

  • Using the singular command when speaking to a group.

    Деца, бъди спокойни!
    Деца, бъдете спокойни!

    Бъди is for one person. For several people, or to be polite, use бъдете.
