Must Not Versus Need Not

Не трябва да пушиш тук. (You must not smoke here.) Няма нужда да идваш. (You don't need to come.)

How It Works

1. Must not. Не трябва да forbids something or warns against it:

  • Не трябва да пушиш тук. (You must not smoke here.)
  • Не трябва да забравяме паспортите. (We mustn't forget the passports.)

2. Need not. To say that something is unnecessary, use one of these:

  • Няма нужда да идваш. (You don't need to come.)
  • Не е нужно да плащате сега. (You don't need to pay now.)
  • Не се налага да чакаш. (There's no need for you to wait.)

3. Who does it. Трябва, няма нужда and не е нужно stay the same. The person is shown by the verb after да: не трябва да пушиш, не трябва да пушим. See having to with трябва да.

4. In the past. Не трябваше да means 'should not have': Не трябваше да казвам това. (I shouldn't have said that.) Нямаше нужда да means 'did not need to': Нямаше нужда да носиш подарък. (You didn't need to bring a present.)

5. The trap for English speakers. If you mean 'you don't have to', never translate it word for word as не трябва да. Bulgarian listeners will hear a prohibition.

Common Mistakes

  • Using не трябва да when the intended meaning is 'you don't have to'.

    Не трябва да идваш утре, срещата е отменена.
    Няма нужда да идваш утре, срещата е отменена.

    Не трябва да would forbid the person from coming. Since the meeting is cancelled, the intended meaning is 'no need', which is няма нужда да.

  • Conjugating трябва for the person.

    Не трябвам да пуша.
    Не трябва да пуша.

    Before да, трябва does not change for the person. Only the verb after да changes.

  • Leaving out да after няма нужда.

    Няма нужда идваш.
    Няма нужда да идваш.

    The verb after няма нужда is always introduced by да.
