The Passive with Бъда

The present passive uses съм: Сградата е ремонтирана. After ще and да, use бъда: Сградата ще бъде ремонтирана. (The building will be renovated.) Трябва да бъде проверено. (It must be checked.)

How It Works

1. Forms. Choose the form of бъда for the subject and add the participle:

  • ще бъда поканен / поканена (I will be invited: said by a man / a woman)
  • ще бъде ремонтиран / ремонтирана / ремонтирано (it will be renovated: masculine / feminine / neuter)
  • ще бъдат ремонтирани (they will be renovated)

2. After да. Constructions with да normally use бъда in the passive: трябва да, може да, следва да, искам да, за да:

  • Писмото трябва да бъде изпратено днес. (The letter must be sent today.)
  • Не искам да бъда разбран погрешно. (I don't want to be misunderstood.)

Also in time and condition clauses. Clauses with когато or ако about the future use бъда too: Когато ремонтът бъде завършен, ще се пренесем. (When the renovation is finished, we will move in.) Ако бъде одобрен, проектът ще започне през май. (If it is approved, the project will start in May.)

3. Negative future. Use няма да + бъде: Проектът няма да бъде одобрен. (The project will not be approved.)

4. Obligation or conclusion. Трябва да бъде проверено means it must be checked, a duty. Трябва да е проверено often means it must have been checked, a conclusion (see трябва да е + минало причастие).

5. Naming the doer. Add the doer with от: Законът ще бъде приет от парламента. (The law will be passed by parliament.) See страдателен залог с от. The present and past use съм and бях instead: Сградата е ремонтирана. Сградата беше ремонтирана миналата година.

    The building will be renovated in the summer.

  2. Всичко трябва да бъде проверено още веднъж.

    Everything must be checked once more.

  3. Не искам да бъда разбран погрешно.

    I don't want to be misunderstood.

    Разбран agrees with a male speaker; a woman says разбрана.

  4. Проектът няма да бъде одобрен без подписите.

    The project will not be approved without the signatures.

  5. Законът ще бъде приет от парламента в петък.

    The law will be passed by parliament on Friday.

  6. Резултатите ще бъдат обявени утре.

    The results will be announced tomorrow.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the dictionary form бъда for every subject.

    Сградата ще бъда ремонтирана.
    Сградата ще бъде ремонтирана.

    Бъда is the first-person singular form. Conjugate it for the subject: бъдеш, бъде, бъдем, бъдете, бъдат.

  • Not making the participle agree with the subject.

    Писмото трябва да бъде изпратен днес.
    Писмото трябва да бъде изпратено днес.

    Писмо is neuter, so the participle takes the neuter ending -о.

  • Using бъда in a plain present statement.

    Вратата бъде затворена.
    Вратата е затворена.

    Бъда is used after да and ще, and in future time or condition clauses with когато or ако, but never in a plain present statement. For a present statement use е, са and the other forms of съм.
