The Future of Съм

Will be is ще бъда or ще съм: Утре ще бъда в офиса, Ще съм там в пет. Both mean the same thing.

How It Works

1. Two sets of forms.

  • аз ще бъда / ще съм
  • ти ще бъдеш / ще си
  • той, тя, то ще бъде / ще е
  • ние ще бъдем / ще сме
  • вие ще бъдете / ще сте
  • те ще бъдат / ще са

The ще съм set simply reuses the present of съм. Both sets are accepted by the Institute for Bulgarian Language. In conversation ще съм and ще е are very common. In news, announcements and careful writing you will often see ще бъде: Срещата ще бъде в понеделник.

2. The negative. Like every future, it uses няма да: Няма да бъда вкъщи or Няма да съм вкъщи (I will not be home). Ще не is never correct.

3. Questions. Add ли after the verb: Ще бъдеш ли свободен в събота? (Will you be free on Saturday?)

4. Where else бъда appears. The same forms follow да: Искам да бъда лекар (I want to be a doctor). See the verb бъда.

  1. Утре ще бъда в офиса.

    Tomorrow I will be in the office.

  2. Ще съм там в пет.

    I will be there at five.

    Ще съм is the everyday equivalent of ще бъда.

  3. Времето ще бъде хубаво през уикенда.

    The weather will be nice over the weekend.

  4. Няма да съм вкъщи довечера.

    I will not be home tonight.

    The negative future uses няма да.

  5. Ще бъдеш ли свободен в събота?

    Will you be free on Saturday?

  6. Сигурно ще е трудно, но ще успеем.

    It will probably be hard, but we will manage.

Common Mistakes

  • Putting не after ще.

    Ще не съм там.
    Няма да съм там.

    The future is negated with няма да, never with ще не.

  • Using a form that does not match the subject.

    Утре аз ще е в офиса.
    Утре аз ще съм в офиса.

    Е belongs to той, тя and то. With аз, use ще съм or ще бъда.
