कि

Saying That: कि

Level 3Sounds Like ki

कि introduces what someone says, thinks or knows.

How It Works

कि works like the English that. It sits between a verb of saying or thinking and the thing said.

VerbExample
कहल (say)माई कहली कि काल्ह छठ के घाट चलल जाई।
जानल (know)हम जानत बानी कि तू थाकल बाड़ऽ।
बुझाइल (seem)हमरा बुझाता कि बरखा होई।
चाहल (want)अमित चाहत बा कि हम पटना आईं।

After चाहल, the second verb takes the wish form (आईं), not the future. Spell कि with the short i; की is a different word.

Examples (5)

कि opens what the speaker thinks.

Common Mistakes

  • Writing की, with a long vowel, instead of कि.

    हम जानत बानी की तू थाकल बाड़ऽ।
    हम जानत बानी कि तू थाकल बाड़ऽ।

कि that links clauses is spelled with the short i.
