बाबूजी आवत बाड़ें
Respect in the Verb
A respected man takes the plural verb even alone, and a woman takes the -ी forms in the present and past.
How It Works
A respected man takes the same verb as ऊ लोग.
| Who | Present | Past |
|---|---|---|
| plain man | आवत बा | आइल |
| respected man | आवत बाड़ें | अइलें |
| woman | आवत बाड़ी | अइली |
So बाबूजी आवत बाड़ें, चाचा जी काल्ह पटना गइलें, मास्टर साहेब पढ़ावत बाड़ें. In the present and past, a woman takes -ी whether she is respected or not: माई कहली, आजी बइठल बाड़ी.
The same verb is used for the speaker's own father, a teacher, a village elder and a guest. Using the singular for them sounds rude.
