прыйсці / прыходзіць
Arriving with Прыйсці and Прыходзіць
Яна прыйшла дадому. (She came home.) The prefix пры- turns go into arrive.
How It Works
Prefixes on ісці and хадзіць make direction pairs. After a prefix ending in a vowel, ісці becomes -йсці, and the й stays in every form: прыйсці, прыйду, прыйшоў.
- прыйсці (perfective, one arrival): прыйду, прыйдзеш, прыйдзе, прыйдзем, прыйдзеце, прыйдуць; past прыйшоў, прыйшла, прыйшлі; imperative прыйдзі.
- прыходзіць (imperfective, habits and repeated arrivals): прыходжу, прыходзіш, with the я-form change of хаджу-type verbs; imperative прыходзь, прыходзьце.
By vehicle, the same prefix goes on ехаць: прыехаць (прыеду, прыедзеш; прыехаў) and прыязджаць (прыязджаю). Мама прыедзе ў нядзелю. (Mom is arriving on Sunday.)
Where to. Places take у or на with the accusative (direction): прыйсці ў школу, на працу, or дадому (home). People take да with the genitive: Прыходзь да мяне! (Come over to my place!)
Arrived versus left. Ён прыйшоў means he is here now. Ён пайшоў means he has left (пайсці).
Things can arrive too: Ліст прыйшоў. (The letter has arrived.) For invitations the imperfective imperative sounds warmest: Прыходзьце ў госці! (Come and visit!)
