Motion by Vehicle: Ехаць and Ездзіць

Level 2Sounds Like ehacʹ í ezdzícʹ

When a vehicle is involved, use ехаць for one trip in one direction (Я еду ў Брэст) and ездзіць for repeated or round trips (Мы ездзім на мора кожнае лета).

How It Works

1. Ехаць: one trip, one direction. Я еду ў Брэст (I am going to Brest), Куды вы едзеце? (Where are you going?). Forms: еду, едзеш, едзе, едзем, едзеце, едуць; past ехаў, ехала, ехалі.

2. Ездзіць: many trips. Use it for habits, round trips in the past and the ability to ride: Я езджу на працу на аўтобусе (I go to work by bus), Летась мы ездзілі ў Польшчу (Last year we went to Poland and came back), Я ўмею ездзіць на ровары (I can ride a bike). Forms: езджу, ездзіш, ездзіць, ездзім, ездзіце, ездзяць; past ездзіў, ездзіла, ездзілі. Note дз → дж in езджу.

3. Naming the vehicle. Use на + locative (на аўтобусе, на машыне, на ровары) or the instrumental (цягніком, аўтобусам): Я еду ў Мінск цягніком. Inside city transport you can also say у трамваі.

4. Destination. As with walking, use у/на + accusative: у Брэст, на мора.

Tip: choose between the pair by the number of directions; choose between ісці/хадзіць and ехаць/ездзіць by whether you walk or ride.

  3. Я еду ў Мінск цягніком.

    I am going to Minsk by train.

    The instrumental цягніком names the transport.

  4. Мы ездзім на мора кожнае лета.

    We go to the sea every summer.

    A repeated trip: ездзіць.

  5. Летась мы ездзілі ў Польшчу.

    Last year we went to Poland.

    Past ездзілі: a trip there and back.

  6. Я ўмею ездзіць на ровары.

    I can ride a bike.

    Ездзіць as a general ability.

Common Mistakes

  • Using the walking verb for a trip by vehicle.

    Заўтра я іду ў Брэст на цягніку.
    Заўтра я еду ў Брэст на цягніку.

    When a person travels, ісці means going on foot. A trip by train takes ехаць.

  • Using ехаць for a regular trip.

    Мы едзем на мора кожнае лета.
    Мы ездзім на мора кожнае лета.

    Кожнае лета shows a repeated trip, so use ездзіць.

  • Misspelling the я form of ездзіць.

    Я ездзю на працу на аўтобусе.
    Я езджу на працу на аўтобусе.

    In the я form, дз changes to дж: езджу.
