Setting Off with Пайсці and Паехаць
(He has gone home, so he is not here.) Пайсці and паехаць mark the start of a trip.
How It Works
Forms.
The root vowel is о when stressed and а when not (akanye): пайду́ but по́йдзеш.
Left and still away. (Where is Hanna? — She has gone to work.) Compare the round trip with (Yesterday I went to the cinema and came back.) The same holds for паехаць and ездзіць: Яны паехалі ў Гродна (they are in Hrodna or on the way) but Яны ездзілі ў Гродна (they went and are back).
Future decisions. (I'll go to the shop.) (In summer we will go to the seaside.) This is the perfective future.
Other uses. With па and the accusative it means going to fetch something (fetching): Яна пайшла па ваду. With rain or snow, пайшоў means it started: Пайшоў дождж. (It started raining.)
To suggest going together, use хадзем. In casual speech people also say Пайшлі! or Паехалі! (Let's go!)
