Crossing with Перайсці and Пераходзіць

Level 3Sounds Like perajscí í perahodzícʹ

Перайдзі вуліцу тут. (Cross the street here.) The prefix пера- means going across.

How It Works

  • перайсці (perfective, one crossing): перайду, пяройдзеш, пяройдзе, пяройдзем, пяройдзеце, пяройдуць; past перайшоў, перайшла, перайшлі; imperative перайдзі.
  • пераходзіць (imperfective): пераходжу, пераходзіш. Тут нельга пераходзіць вуліцу. (You can't cross the street here.)

Why пяройдзеш? When the stress falls on -ро-, the е just before it is written я (yakanye): пяро́йдзеш. In перайду́ the stress is further away, so the е stays.

What you cross. Usually the accusative with no preposition: перайсці вуліцу, дарогу, мяжу (border). For a river or other obstacle, цераз is common: перайсці цераз раку. Праз means through or across: перайсці праз мост.

Moving and switching. The verb also means moving from one place or state to another: перайсці ў другі пакой (to go into another room), перайсці ў іншую школу (to change schools), перайсці на беларускую мову (to switch to Belarusian), перайсці на ты (to start using the informal ты).

By vehicle, use пераехаць (пераеду; пераехаў), which also means to move house: Мы пераехалі ў Мінск. (We moved to Minsk.) The meanings of redoing and overdoing, as in перачытаць, belong to the prefix пера- on other verbs.
