Approaching and Moving Away
Падысці да means to walk up to; адысці ад means to step away from: падысці да акна (to walk up to the window), адысці ад дзвярэй (to step away from the door).
How It Works
Spelling. When a prefix ending in a consonant (пад-, ад-, аб-, раз-) joins a word beginning with і, the і is written and said as ы (the letters ы and і): падысці, адысці, абысці, разысціся. The 2008 spelling rules give падысці, абысці and разысціся as examples.
Prepositions. (Step back from the edge!)
By vehicle, the prefixes are пад- and ад- with an apostrophe: пад'ехаць, ад'ехаць (the apostrophe). (The bus pulled up to the stop.)
Useful extra meanings.
- падыходзіць + dative = to suit, to fit: Гэты колер табе падыходзіць. (This color suits you.)
- адыходзіць about trains = to depart: Цягнік адыходзіць а восьмай. (The train leaves at eight.)
