कै for Possession

Of: कै

Level 1Sounds Like kai (sambandha)

कै joins two nouns and means of or 's, for every noun.

How It Works

Hindi has का, की and के. Awadhi uses one word, कै, between two nouns.

PhraseMeaning
अमित कै बहिनAmit's sister
चाय कै दुकानtea shop
रात कै खानाdinner

In a few fixed phrases the word changes to के:

  • खाए के बाद (after eating)
  • साँझ के बेरा (in the evening)
  • फिलिम के बारे मा (about the film)
  • अम्मा के संग (with Mom)

Never say कै बाद or कै बारे मा. For these, the word is always के.

Some Lucknow speakers use का, के and की as in Hindi. Those are fine to hear, but the lessons use कै.
