-টো for the Thing
The Thing: -টো
-টো works like “the”: এই আমটো মিঠা “this mango is sweet”.
How It Works
Nouns in Assamese have no word for “the”. The ending -টো does that work for things and animals.
| Noun | With -টো |
|---|---|
| আম “mango” | আমটো “the mango” |
| মেকুৰী “cat” | মেকুৰীটো “the cat” |
| কুকুৰ “dog” | কুকুৰটো “the dog” |
| বতৰ “weather” | বতৰটো “the weather” |
-টো and -টা are different. -টা is the counting word that follows a number (এটা). -টো marks the noun as one you already know about.
Use -জন for a man, because -টো for a person can sound rude.
You can leave -টো off. আম মিঠা is also a fine sentence, and it talks about mangoes in general.
