-জন / -জনী for the Person

The Person: -জন and -জনী

Level 1Sounds Like jana / -janī

-জন and -জনী work like “the” for a person: মানুহজন “the man”.

How It Works

When you speak about one particular person, add the ending.

NounDefinite
মানুহ “person”মানুহজন “the man”
ডাক্তৰ “doctor”ডাক্তৰজন “the doctor”
ছোৱালী “girl”ছোৱালীজনী “the girl”
বন্ধু “friend”বন্ধুজন “the friend”

The ending -জন is the same word that counts people (এজন). Here it sits on the noun and means “the”.

Keep the two patterns apart. A number with the counting word stands before the noun and counts: এজন মানুহ is “a man”. The ending alone stands after the noun and points at one known person: মানুহজন is “the man”.

The verb does not change for a man or a woman. The ending on the noun shows it.
