Counting Things with -টা
Number plus -টা counts things: টেবুলত চাৰিটা গিলাচ আছে “there are four glasses on the table”.
How It Works
-টা is a classifier, a small word that goes with a number. Assamese usually uses one when it counts things. Words for time and money usually take none, as in দুই বছৰ “two years” and দহ টকা “ten rupees”.
| Number | With -টা |
|---|---|
| 1 | এটা |
| 2 | দুটা |
| 3 | তিনিটা |
| 4 | চাৰিটা |
| 5 | পাঁচটা |
The bare numbers এক, দুই and তিনি are used in other ways, as in এক কাপ চাহ “one cup of tea”.
The form এটা, with এ- “one”, also means “a” or “an”. এটা মেকুৰী is “a cat” as well as “one cat”.
People are counted with -জন, and women and girls with -জনী. A flat thing such as a book takes -খন: এখন কিতাপ.
