-এ / -ই / -ৱে for the Doer

The Doer: -এ

Level 2Sounds Like ē / -i / -raē

The doer of an action often takes -এ, and the ending changes a little after a vowel.

How It Works

The noun that does the action is usually marked, most clearly when the action is done to something: মাকে ভাত ৰান্ধে “Mother cooks rice”. Many actions with no object are marked too: ৰফিকুলে দৌৰে “Rafiqul runs”. With verbs of coming and going the noun can also stay bare. Pronouns মই “I”, তুমি “you” and আপুনি “you” stay as they are.

The noun ends inEndingExample
a consonant-েমাক → মাকে
া-ইদেউতা → দেউতাই
ি or ী-য়েছোৱালী → ছোৱালীয়ে
উ or ু-ৱেগৰু → গৰুৱে

Look at মোৰ ভাইটিয়ে গুৱাহাটীত পঢ়ে “my younger brother studies in Guwahati”. The word ভাইটি ends in ি, so it takes -য়ে.

The ending marks the one who acts. It is not a plural sign, and it does not change the verb.

Examples (5)

  1. মোৰ ভাইটিয়ে গুৱাহাটীত পঢ়ে।

My younger brother studies in Guwahati.

ভাইটি ends in ি, so it takes -য়ে.

  2. দেউতাই চাহ খায়।

    Father drinks tea.

দেউতা ends in া, so it takes -ই.

  3. মাকে ভাত ৰান্ধে।

    Mother cooks rice.

মাক ends in a consonant, so it takes -ে.

  4. গৰুৱে ঘাঁহ খায়।

    The cow eats grass.

গৰু ends in উ, so it takes -ৱে.

  5. ছোৱালীজনীয়ে কিতাপ পঢ়ে।

    The girl reads a book.

The classifier -জনী ends in ী, so the ending is -য়ে.

Common Mistakes

  • Do not add -এ to মই or তুমি.

    মইয়ে চাহ খাওঁ।
    মই চাহ খাওঁ।

The pronoun মই takes no ending, and the verb already shows who acts.
